Neo-Nazis marching on the anniversary of the infamous 1938 Nazi pogrom Kristallnacht ran into a wall of more than 1,000 counter-protesters bearing the Star of David in Prague's old Jewish quarter yesterday, the BBC reports. Czech police had earlier detained some of the skinheads, members of the Young Nationalist Democrats, who were armed with batons and homemade Molotov cocktails.
Scuffles broke out across the capital, but police largely contained any violence. The march, officially to protest the Czech presence in Iraq, had been banned by courts. But in the end, skinheads proceeded, as did Czechs bearing "Never Again" banners. "I came because I don't like these idiots with their shaved heads," said one teenager. (More Neo-Nazi stories.)
