The lawyer who defended the Unabomber and Timothy McVeigh is poised to defend Jared Lee Loughner, the alleged gunman in the Tucson shooting. The Phoenix Federal Public Defender’s office has suggested San Diego attorney Judy Clarke handle the case; she’ll join Loughner in court today and request to be his attorney as he faces five federal felony charges, reports the Arizona Republic.

Meanwhile, police say Loughner isn’t cooperating with them: He has invoked his right to remain silent and has said “not a word” to investigators in the last 48 hours, ABC News reports. Officials think he acted alone. “He's a typical troubled individual who's a loner,” said the sheriff in the case.
