Wikileaks is prepping for the biggest leak of military intelligence ever: A trove of documents from the toughest years of the Iraq war. The leak will include up to 400,000 reports from 2004-2009, notes Wired, and may shape America's tenuous relationship with the Iraqi people. Here's what to look for:
- Roadside bombs: Iraq became the "proving ground" for today's weapon of choice, improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, writes Ackerman. The tech behind these deadly devices was linked, inconclusively, to Iran. The documents may provide evidence to support such claims.
- Missing US guns: In 2007, the military lost some 200,000 AK-47s and pistols that were supposed to be used by Iraqi soldiers and police. With any luck, Ackerman says, the documents will shed some light on how "thousands of guns fell off the back of a truck."
- Ethnic cleansing in Baghdad: How much did American troops know about the "death squads" that targeted civilians in 2005-2006 or the displacement of about a million Baghdadis in 2006-2007? The documents may force Gen. George Casey, then the top general in Iraq, to answer this question.
