Like many Democratic über-donors, liberal billionaire George Soros is sitting this election out, but says throwing money at elections is something he didn’t like to do in the first place. “I made an exception getting involved in 2004,” Soros tells the New York Times. “And since I didn’t succeed in 2004, I remained engaged in 2006 and 2008. But I’m basically not a party man.”

Soros says he’ll spend his money backing progressive causes instead of candidates. Asked if the prospect of a Republican takeover bothered him, Soros replied, “It does, because I think they are pushing the wrong policies, but I’m not in a position to stop it. I don’t believe in standing in the way of an avalanche.” (Read more George Soros stories.)
