The Houston Chronicle is calling it: "2019 was the year of Adam Driver," writes Wei-Huan Chen, noting the Marine-turned-actor "is starring in the best domestic drama of the year (Marriage Story), the best political docudrama of the year (The Report), and likely the most popular film of the year (Star Wars)." That's all perhaps a bit much, even for Driver. The actor, who's spoken openly about an aversion to watching himself on screen, walked out of an interview with NPR's Fresh Air this month after the show aired a clip of him singing in Marriage Story. "We don't really understand why he left," executive producer Danny Miller tells Variety, noting host Terry Gross, in NPR's studio in Philadelphia, had advised Driver, at NPR's New York offices, to temporarily remove his headphones for the clip, just as he did in a 2015 interview.

"But this time around, after the clip concluded we were informed by our engineer in New York that he had walked out of the studio, and then left the building," says Miller. "We still don’t understand why." Driver recently told the New Yorker that he "went totally cold" and "felt like I had to puke" after sitting through the 2015 premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Driver even told Fresh Air in 2015 that "I've watched myself or listened to myself before, then always hate it." He added, "I have, like, a tendency to ... drive myself and the other people around me crazy with the things I wanted to change or I wish I could change." Change is highly unnecessary in this case, as Marriage Story has landed Driver both Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations for best actor. He also has a good shot at a best actor Oscar, per Entertainment Tonight. (More Adam Driver stories.)
