Exiled Pakistan Leader Vows Return to Battle Musharraf
Pakistan's President Gen. Pervez Musharraf. The power struggle that could unseat Musharraf heated up Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007 as his main rivals dug in against his re-election plan and the government defended a ban on two exiled opposition leaders serving again as prime minister. Former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif has announced he will return from exile next month to challenge General Musharraf in upcoming elections. The development comes as Musharraf is negotiating a power-sharing deal with another political rival, Benazir Bhutto. Some observers fear the army could replace Musharraf with another military figure to retain political power.

Sharif said in London he plans to "start a decisive struggle against dictatorship," and called on Musharraf to step down as army chief and president. Musharraf is considering resigning his army post as part of his agreement with Bhutto. Sharif was critical of  Bhutto's negotiations. "I disagree with Ms. Bhutto's policy of shaking hands with a dictator," he said. (More Pakistan stories.)
