DJ Spooky is not your average turntabilist. The sci-fi-writing, French-lit-and-philosophy-studying 39-year-old has created arguably the greatest remix ever with his trip-hop soundtrack for the controversial 1915 film Birth of a Nation, the Stimulist reports. Next on the list for this soon-to-be household name? Showing his Rebirth of a Nation at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. The June 22-28 exhibit is a must-see.

Spooky’s sound as a composer/producer is “illbient”—his word, meaning hip-hop mixed with electronica and lots of samples. Not to be typecast, he has had an essay collection published by MIT, art exhibited at prestigious shows, and work shown at the Sundance Film Festival. Oh, and he composed a film score—and counts creatives from James Joyce to Marcel Duchamp among his influences. (More DJ Spooky stories.)
