How This Tastes to a Vegetarian
"I take the dyspepsia as a sign that my brain has decided I shouldn't eat mammals too big for me to bench-press," Jacobs writes of his post-steak tummy rumblings.   (AP Photo)

The embarrassment for a cow in being a meal for a human one-fifth its size is among the reasons AJ Jacobs doesn’t eat meat. “If my body ended up as brunch for some badger or dachshund, I know I'd be pissed,” he writes in Esquire. But that wasn’t enough for carnivorous colleagues, who took him to Brooklyn’s premier steakhouse in a conversion effort.

Peter Luger’s was the sort of place with “a selection of vegetables ranging from potatoes to potatoes.” The two-and-half-bites of steak he eats were, Jacobs must admit, “absolutely delicious. Salty and charred.” But after two decades of not eating red meat, his stomach somewhat violently disagreed. “Tomorrow,” he writes, “it's back to plants and tiny animals.” (More steak stories.)
