Taco Bell has been trying to ensure the phrase "Taco Tuesday" is available for anyone (including, of course, Taco Bell) to use, and the fast food chain notched a big win in its battle over the trademarking of the phrase back in July, when the chain Taco John's, which operates restaurants in 20 states, gave up the fight against Taco Bell. It forfeited its trademark of the phrase, which it had held in 49 states for two decades, but in that 50th state—New Jersey—a different eatery had held the trademark for more than four decades, and it continued to hold out. But now even that dining establishment has given up: Gregory's Restaurant and Bar forfeited its trademark this week, meaning Taco Bell's fight to free "Taco Tuesday" is truly complete, CNN reports.

"For Gregory's Restaurant and Bar, 'Taco Tuesday' brought a lot of pride over the past 40 years," the eatery's co-owner says. "Relinquishing the trademark registration doesn't change that, but it does allow others in New Jersey the same opportunity to build their own traditions and help spread Taco Tuesdays throughout New Jersey." Neither side has said whether a financial settlement was involved in the restaurant's decision, but a trademark attorney tells CNN the legal fees for Gregory's, were it to have fought Taco Bell in court, would have been at least $100,000. Now restaurants across the US can officially use the term "Taco Tuesday" without fear of legal action, Axios reports. Presumably, Taco Bell will be among them. (More Taco Bell stories.)
