Houston cardiologist Mark Hausknecht earned his 15 minutes of fame back in 2000 when he treated former President George HW Bush for an irregular heartbeat and appeared at a news conference with him. Eighteen years later, Hausknecht is again in the headlines, for the worst of reasons. Police say the 65-year-old was shot to death Friday morning as he rode his bike to work at the Texas Medical Center—and he was shot by another bicyclist, reports the Houston Chronicle. The gunman is still at large, and police have no idea what prompted the shooting. All they know is that the two bicyclists passed each other on Main Street about 8:50am, and the gunman then turned around and shot the doctor.
"There are a lot of cameras, so we're hoping we can get some footage of this and bring this violent criminal into custody, where he needs to be right away," says a Houston police official. Authorities describe the shooter as a slender, white or Hispanic male about 30 years old, reports Click2Houston, and they're still trying to figure out whether Hausknecht was a target or whether it was a random attack. The former president took note of the shooting. "Mark was a fantastic cardiologist and a good man," he said in a statement. "I will always be grateful for his exceptional, compassionate care.
