A new Thompson Reuters Foundation survey names the 10 countries deemed to be the least safe for women, and the Washington Post focuses on the nation that claims the title of most dangerous. "India has shown utter disregard and disrespect for women … rape, marital rapes, sexual assault and harassment, female infanticide [have] gone unabated," a government official from Karnataka state says. But another "surprise" country on the list, which was based on a poll of about 550 experts on women's issues, hits closer to home. The United States makes the top 10, mainly due to recent headlines and campaigns against sexual misconduct and violence. "We are going to look back and see this as a very powerful tipping point," says one domestic violence expert. The list follows.

Here, the 10 most perilous-for-women nations:

  1. India
  2. Afghanistan
  3. Syria
  4. Somalia
  5. Saudi Arabia
  6. United States
  7. Pakistan
  8. Congo
  9. Yemen
  10. Nigeria
