A Republican lawmaker who earlier this week offered to introduce a Democratic bill barring the separation of immigrant families crossing the US-Mexico border is now out for blood. "I'm glad the President ended the border separation policy," but he "should fire Stephen Miller now," Rep. Mike Coffman of Colorado tweeted Thursday, referring to the senior policy adviser who was reportedly a major force behind the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" stance on immigration. "This is a human rights mess," added Coffman, whose district includes one in five Hispanic voters, per Politico. "It is on the President to clean it up." Per CNN, Coffman appears to be among a group of "deeply frustrated" moderate Republicans who view the immigration policy as a misstep ahead of an election in which they are already at risk.

After first influencing the administration's 2017 travel ban affecting predominantly Muslim countries, "he led the president down a path that again ended in disaster," a Republican congressional staffer tells Politico of 32-year-old Miller, described by Snopes as "the descendant of asylum seekers who escaped anti-Jewish persecution in Eastern Europe." Miller's mentor, however, takes a different stance, per the Guardian. "He's a very smart young man" but "there's a f---ing lynching going on here," says conservative writer David Horowitz, who met Miller as a high school student and later suggested him for a job under Jeff Sessions, then an Alabama senator. In what the Guardian calls "an echo of a lie advanced by Trump," Horowitz adds, "the government's hands are tied by Obama and the Democrats, so if a kid gets in, everybody gets in. It's disgusting."
