(Newser) – A California man desperate to save his wife's life made an unusual offer: his truck, his trailer, and one of his kidneys in return for a slice of healthy liver from somebody with O-positive or O-negative blood. In a Facebook post that went viral, Verlon Robinson, 55, said he couldn't imagine life without his wife, Marie, who has cirrhosis of the liver and will eventually suffer organ failure without a new liver, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. "We have been married for 25 years and it breaks my heart when I think about losing her," he said. "I would do anything to trade places with her, but as you know that's impossible."

The disease "was due to fatty liver," Robinson says, per KCBD. "Yeah, it's kind of in the genes, kind of thing." Marie says she has been on the transplant waiting list for three years, but there are 18,000 others on it. "There are so many people out there [who] are sick, and need help, and I am just one of them," she says. "I just have a wonderful husband who is willing to give it all." Robinson, who has received numerous offers of help, later updated his Facebook post to say he could no longer offer the 2004 Dodge pickup and the trailer. "I was called by UCFS today and was told it was against the rules to offer my material stuff," he said, adding that they said he could still offer his kidney.
