President Trump remained relatively low-key over the weekend in regard to the government shutdown, but he sounded pretty happy Monday afternoon after the Senate cleared the way to ending it. “I am pleased that Democrats in Congress have come to their senses,” Trump said in a statement read by press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. The shutdown isn't officially over quite yet, but formal votes in the House and Senate later Monday were all but assured. Details and developments:

  • The deal: Senate Democrats agreed to the deal to fund the government for three weeks after Mitch McConnell promised to allow a vote on immigration legislation next month, reports the Wall Street Journal. (Here's how the next steps could play out, as explained by Vox.)
  • Democrats caved? Aaron Blake of the Washington Post makes the case that Democrats led by Chuck Schumer "caved" without any substantive concessions from Republicans. After all, McConnell didn't promise a resolution of the DACA issue and protection for "dreamers," but merely a vote if the issue isn't resolved. On the first real day of the shutdown, "Democrats pretty quickly took a deal that was well shy of what they were demanding," writes Blake.
  • 2020 candidates: The vote passed 81-18, and among the no votes were virtually every Democrat (or independent, in the case of Bernie Sanders) considering a 2020 run, reports the Hill. Those names include Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, and Kirsten Gillibrand. Amy Klobuchar was the only senator widely seen as a potential candidate to vote yes.
  • Progressives angry: CNN rounds up reaction from critics of the deal on the left, including this quote from Sen. Kamala Harris: "Listen, I'm disappointed with a conversation that suggests a false choice: You either fund the government or you take care of these DACA kids. We can do both."
