Stocks End the Day Lower

US stock indexes are closing slightly lower as retailers and media companies decline, the AP reports. Women's clothing retailer J. Jill lost half its value Thursday after the company slashed its forecast for the third quarter. AT&T sank 6.1%, its worst loss in nine years, after the company said it was losing DirecTV subscribers. Cable company Charter fell 2.6% and entertainment conglomerate Viacom lost 2.5% on reports that Viacom channels may go off the air in the New York area because of a contract dispute. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 4 points, or 0.2%, to 2,550. The Dow Jones industrial average lost 31 points, or 0.1%, 22,841. The Nasdaq composite fell 12 points, or 0.2%, to 6,591.
