Getting around town is made easier if your city has a decent mass-transit system, and it can offer many benefits compared with hopping behind the wheel yourself, including extra exercise, better accessibility to prime job locations, and affordability. Boston is the best US city on the public transportation front, per a ranking by 24/7 Wall St., which looked at various metrics based on a city's transit infrastructure and ridership stats, including miles traveled and trip length. Here, the top five cities, plus the percentage of commuters there who use public transit:

  1. Boston, Mass.-NH-RI; 13.7%
  2. Bremerton, Wash.; 9.2%
  3. Baltimore; 7.9%
  4. Honolulu; 9.2%
  5. Ithaca, NY; 10.6%
