Stocks are ending mostly lower on Wall Street after modest gains from the morning didn't make it through the day, the AP reports. Utilities, energy, and materials companies fell the most Tuesday, while some consumer-focused stocks did well. Chesapeake Energy gave up 2.7%, and Sealed Air fell 8.9%. United Continental and American Airlines each rose 4.8% after reporting higher traffic numbers. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 2 points, or 0.1%, to 2,396. The Dow Jones industrial average lost 36 points, or 0.2%, to 20,975. The Nasdaq composite picked up 17 points, or 0.3%, to 6,120, another record. More stocks fell than rose on the New York Stock Exchange. (More stock market stories.)
