A GoPro video documents a couple's harrowing seven-minute escape from the deadly flash flood that hit Zion National Park on Monday. KTLA reports Jordan Birnbaum and his girlfriend were halfway up the 1,500-foot climb to Angels Landing lookout when the rain started to fall. “Oh my God. We need to get down,” Birnbaum can be heard saying to his girlfriend and other hikers in the video. “Guys, we need to go down, it’s going to flood.” The couple had to traverse flooded trails while being battered by 50mph winds, according to CBS Los Angeles. And KPHO reports hail "the size of marbles."
“All we were thinking about was survival,” Birnbaum tells CBS. “It was just, ‘We’re going to get down this mountain.'” Birnbaum and his girlfriend did make it to safety, but others weren't so lucky. KTLA reports a group of seven hikers were killed that day when more than half an inch of rain fell on the park in the span of an hour, creating a flash flood. "These things are fast, they are deadly, and they can strike anywhere," Birnbaum says, as reported by KPHO. The seven hikers killed in the flooding posed for a group photo shortly before the tragedy.
