Police in New Fairfield, Connecticut, say it will take several weeks to finish the investigation into the bizarre case in which a man shot and killed a knife-wielding masked prowler, only to learn it was his own teenage son. But the local News-Times clarifies one tragic detail: Jeffrey Giuliano didn't realize he shot 15-year-old Tyler until paramedics and police arrived and removed the teen's ski mask. He didn't do so himself. No charges have been filed. Some developments:
- Giuliano told police that his sister called from next door about a prowler trying to break into her home. He grabbed a gun and confronted the youth, who was clad all in black and wielding a knife. Police say a scuffle ensued, and Giuliano shot the youth multiple times, reports the Hartford Courant.
- Tyler, who was adopted by the Giulianos a few years ago, is described as a friendly kid without a history of trouble with the law. "He was just a sweet person and he always made everyone laugh," one classmate tells AP.
- The News-Times says Tyler had unspecified trouble at his original home and was taken in temporarily by one local family (it went well) before being adopted by the Giulianos. It adds that his "status updates on a social networking platform called Lifestream often took on a more melancholy tone."
