This can't be good: Der Spiegel has published photographs that depict two US soldiers posing with the body of an Afghan man just after he was killed last year. In one photo published in a print edition of the magazine that will be distributed tomorrow, Cpl. Jeremy Morlock grins as he lifts the head of a corpse by the hair. In another, Pvt. 1st Class Andrew Holmes poses with the same corpse. A third reportedly shows two apparently dead men propped against a pillar, reports the AP.
Morlock and Holmes—along with three other members of the 5th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division—have been charged with murder in the death of Gul Mudin, an unarmed Afghan civilian killed in January 2010. The Army says the photos depict "actions repugnant to us as human beings and contrary to the standards and values of the United States Army. The actions portrayed in these photographs remain under investigation and are now the subject of ongoing US court-martial proceedings." Click for more on the case. (More Jeremy Morlock stories.)
